The second, revised edition of One-to-One is now available. The first
edition (published June 2001) proved to be a great success with home educators, people interested in home education, and
with parents who
want to balance school work with gentler activities in the home. The new
edition is being stocked by W H Smith - the UKs leading book retailer but
is still available to visitors to our web site at a competitive rate. We first published One-to-One because we felt that there was a need for a book that, instead of trying to adapt classroom techniques to the home, recognised the ability that parents have to educate their own children, and that the home is the best place in which to learn. The book is based on the premise that the first duty of everyone involved in education is to ensure that children are happy. When children are happy, everything else flows smoothly. In addition to comprehensive sections on reading, writing and arithmetic, there are detailed sections on gardening, cooking, crafts, art, and play.
Author's Note: I wrote One-to-One over the period from 1997 to
2001. It was a collaborative effort based upon extensive discussions with
my children in which they gave their opinions about the various things
that Lin and I had done with them over the years. The result is, I
hope, an honest attempt to describe the things that worked and how to avoid
the things that don't work. Gareth Lewis |

About the Illustrators: One-to-One is illustrated with 344 line drawings by our children, Bethan, Wendy and Samuel. They are self-taught artists - putting into practice the principle laid out in the book, that given time and a certain amount of encouragement, children (and adults) are capable of learning without being subjected to the rigours of the school system.
